Family: Parmeliaceae

Melanelia culbersonii is a rare lichen usually found only on rocks at higher elevations in the mountains. While it may look like some dark crud growing on a rock, its tell-tale signature is the whitish crests along its structure, looking like light squiggles.

Within Virginia, this lichen is listed as S2, i.e., imperiled at the state level. Globally, it is listed as G2G4, meaning it is somewhere between G2 and G4, i.e., somewhere between imperiled and apparently secure.
