Family: Sclerodermatineae (Bolete order)

Calostoma ravenelii is one of the puffball mushrooms, i.e., it doesn't form external gills to release its spores. Its genus name Calostoma appropriately means "beautiful mouth", an apt description of mushroom's apex.

The only other species in our area that looks like Calostoma ravenelii is the closely related and more common Calostoma lutescens, but C. lutescens has a collar (usually-tattered when fruiting) below the globe.
