Family: Asteraceae (Aster / Sunflower family)
Mid-Atlantic bloom time: July - September
New York Ironweed is a perennial with multiple greeish-purple stems that grows to about 2 meters tall. Its numerous tiny, fluffy, deep purple, composite flowers (rays absent) grow in loose, 3-4" wide, terminal clusters (cymes) at the top of its stems. It prefers wet or damp areas, such as floodplain forest, riverbanks, and fens. It is somewhat suggestive of Joe-Pye-weed species, such as Hollow Joe-Pye-weed (Eutrochium fistulosum), except leaves of New York Ironweed are alternate, not opposite or whorled.
