Rubus phoenicolasius

Wineberry

[not native to the Mid-Atlantic area - considered to be invasive]

Family: Rosaceae (Rose family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: May - June
Mid-Atlantic fruit ripe: June - July

Wineberry's flowers are pink or rose colored. Their sepals are longer than its petals and soon cover the developing fruits. Its canes are covered in red glandular 3–5 mm slender straight prickles and bristles, aiding in identification. When the canes touch the ground, they can re-root and form new plants.

Although Wineberry fruits are delicious, it is a nasty non-native invasive from Asia. Do everyone a favor and collect as many berries as you can for jellies, jams and pastries, or just eating out of hand. Just don't spit the seeds out into the wild!
