Kidneyleaf Buttercup is widespread across much of North America. Its basal leaves are kidney-shaped to circular, with scalloped margins. Its stem leaves are alternate and variable in shape, ranging from oblanceolate to toothed and incised. Its flowers have five yellow petals, with a ring of stamens around a round cluster of green carpels.
Kidneyleaf Buttercup's species epithet 'abortivus' probably refers to its small petals that look like they have not fully developed.
