Family: Asteraceae (Aster / Sunflower family)
Mid-Atlantic bloom time: late April - early June
Yarrow-leaved Ragwort gets both its common name and its species epithat from the resemblance of its leaves to Yarrow. It has a global rarity rank of G3 (Vulnerable).
Its status in Lee County, Virginia has been questioned, saying the "material needs additional assessment to determine if it is actually conspecific with P. millefolium, which seems implausible based on habitat and biogeography."1 The Digital Atlas of Virginia Flora2 elaborates:
"Our material keys closest to P. millefolium but does not match the morphology of that species in the heart of its range (NC-SC-GA), where it occurs on completely different substrates and landforms from the Virginia populations. The taxonomic status of Virginia plants is currently under study."
