Maleberry is a woody plant that has pale white flowers which look much like huckleberries or blueberries. However, instead of producing edible fruits, it produces hard dry capsules. Its leaves have fine, appressed hairs.
It is tolerant of fire, budding and sending up shoots from its rhizome if aboveground parts are burned away. It prefers moist habitats but can grow in dry oak/heath forests. It has two variants: var. ligustrina, in which the inflorescences are naked or with only a few bracts; and var. foliosiflora, in which the inflorescences (at least the lower ones) have conspicuous leafy bracts.
