Red Dead-nettle, Purple Dead-nettle

[not native to the Mid-Atlantic area]

Family: Lamiaceae

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: March - October

Dead-nettle is so hamed because its leaves resemble true nettles (Urtica), but do not sting. The leaves on the flower stalks of Dead-nettle have petioles (leaf stalks), which distinguishes them from Henbit's (Lamium amplexicaule) sessile (unstalked) leaves on the flower stem.
