Dicentra cucullaria

Dutchman's Breeches

[ click on any image below to see larger version ]

Family: Fumariaceae (Fumitory family; sometimes subsumed into the Papaveraceae poppy family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: March - April
Mid-Atlantic fruit ripe: May - June

As its common name indicates, the flowers on Dutchman's Breeches look like a pair of white pantaloons with yellow waists turned upside down.

Compare this to the closely related but less common Squirrel Corn (Dicentra canadensis).

Purportedly it can cause cattle to stagger drunkenly if they graze on it because of some narcotic and toxic substances in this poppy-related genus.
