Family: Orchidaceae (Orchid family)

Mid-Atlantic bloom time: May
Mid-Atlantic fruit ripe: June - August

Kentucky Lady's Slipper is Virginia's largest Lady's-slipper orchid. Its blooms vary from a bright yellow to a muted cream, almost white color.

Virginia's population is limited to Lancaster County and is significantly disjunct from its nearest neighbors in Kentucky and Tennessee. Kentucky Lady's Slipper is listed at G3 (globally vulnerable) and S1 in Virginia (critically imperiled - at very high risk of extirpation). As with all orchids, it should never be disturbed nor removed from where it's growing. It is inextricably linked to its fungal partner and will not survive transplanting.
