Eastern Pine Gall Rust

Family: Cronartiaceae

Eastern Pine Gall Rust is a fungus using 2- and 3-needled pines as its primary host, and species of red oaks (Quercus) as its alternate host. Victim pine trees develop a large gall. While it causes little damage on older pine trees, infection of seedlings can result in severe stunting or death. For this reason it is known as a pest species requiring quarantine when encountered in commercial forestry.
